You can use this random dice roller to get truly random dice rolls. Each die can have between 3 and 40 sides (D3, D4, D5, D6, D8, D12, D18, D20 etc.). You can roll just a single die, two dice, three dice, four dice, etc. up to 10 dice simultaneously.

For example, for DnD you can select a 4-sided, 6-sided, 8-sided, 10-sided, 12-sided, or 20-sided die and click "Roll Dice" to roll a die. If you need to roll two dice, say two 10-sided dice, select 10 for the number of sides and then select 2 for the number of dice to roll.

For reference, these are the names of the figures commonly used dice are shaped as:

2-sided die - no such dice, that's a coin!

3-sided die - a pyramid (3 faces, d3)

4-sided die - a tetrahedron (4 faces, d4)

6-sided die - a cube (6 faces, d6)

8-sided die - an octahedron (8 faces, d8)

10-sided die - a deltohedron a.k.a. pentagonal trapezohedron (10 faces, d10)

12-sided die - a dodecahedron (12 faces, d12)

20-sided die - an icosahedron (20 faces, d20)

While some of these figures can be irregular, all fair dice are shaped as regular figures, e.g. regular octahedron, regular dodecahedron, regular icosahedron, etc.

The philosophical question of what exactly "random" is is a topic for a long discussion. However, we can say that the defining characteristic of a random event is its unpredictability. In other words, if one cannot predict the outcome of a die roll or predict that a given side will turn up with greater probability than any other side, then the die roll is random and we would call it a fair die. No matter how many dice rolls you observe from our virtual dice roller, you will not improve your chances of guessing the die side which will turn up on the next roll (figuratively speaking).

A virtual die roll or dice roll performed by a computer will usually be more balanced than a roll using a physical mass-produced die. Most manufacturers of physical dice cannot deliver a perfectly uniform distribution of the mass of the die in its entire volume, nor can they guarantee perfectly symmetric thickness of each side, and in some cases slight imperfections in the die shape are also possible. Due to this, the vast majority of the time you will find a digital die like our random dice roller to be truly random whereas an actual die, being a flawed physical object, will tend to exhibit small bias.

Of course, if you are playing a game sitting on a table, the feeling of the die in your hand and the anticipation while it rolls is an important part of the game experience for many. A slight bias in the die may not be a big deal, especially if no one has measured it. On the other hand, if you are playing DnD or another game online, using a software dice roller is your only option to roll a die. Our tool makes for an excellent DnD dice roller.
