We posted the 2024 video last year, so I think it's appropriate to post Marcus Whitman's way-too-long season preview for the Vikings:
2 hours and 37 minutes! Woof. The Arif Hasan part is 36 minutes on its own.
Some blurbs from the video:
* Marcus claims the Vikings have the best roster in football outside of the QB position, so the whole roster is being weighted down by JJ. He is neutral on JJ McCarthy, not making any hot takes. I do find it a little strange after he was so confident in Darnold last year (something I criticized him for and I look dumb now for it) for the reason that O'Connell could coach him up.
* On O'Connell, he calls him one of, if not the best pass play designers out there. He claims that KOC's one weakness is having an unimaginative run game that "looks a decade old" and has been a problem for years.
* Our "weapons" rank tied for #1 in the league with 2 other teams. Notes that our WR depth is among the league's shallowest after the Moore injury
* He has our OL listed at #4 in the league. He expects Donovan Jackson to struggle a lot as a rookie, but says that him as the weak link on the OL is a good problem to have with the ceiling he has as a prospect.
* He lists the offense #14 in the league, but that's if JJ McCarthy is the 28th best QB in the league. If he's better than that (hard to imagine he wouldn't be...), then that ranking would rise even higher. I would bet on the over.
* The video unfortunately dropped 3 hours before the Harrison Phillips trade was made. He posted in an update and believe this is a massive hit to the defense:
Still thinking about it and man I think that's a terrible move for Minnesota to dump Harrison Phillips. This team runs a lot of odd fronts, they need a nose tackle! He's the only guy in that DL who can hold the point of attack. Not to mention, it is reckless to now put added pressure on Allen/Hargrave to contribute against the run where they
A) Aren't very good
B) Will be more gassed to rush the QB
C) Will be exposed to dirty work and injuries, which is their primary concern!
Maybe I'm over reacting but this is a head scratcher. * He ranks the secondary 23rd-25th in the league at coverage. He is very high on Isaiah Rodgers, but is very concerned about Okudah being on the field, Arif expects teams to isolate him and take advantage whenever he's on the field. Marcus thinks Tavierre Thomas would be a better starting CB than Okudah, though I guess he hasn't noticed that the Vikings are playing him at safety. He also has a low grade on Theo Jackson, which I think he may be sleeping on. Arif chose Theo as his breakout player of the season.
* Of the teams ranked #32 to #8, the Vikings have 14 guys with a > 79 rating whereas the next closest teams are at 10. We've got a lot of good players at many different positions.
* Arif makes some good points on the legitimate criticisms of McCarthy compared to the poorly made ones I've debated in the past few weeks. * One funny tidbit is that Marcus notes that when talking about the Patriots OL getting trucked by our iDL, he has heard that Garrett Bradbury appears to be losing the job to a 3rd round rookie.
* Arif says smash the over on 8.5 wins (he said hit the under on 7.5 wins last year...), but it seems like some betting sites are moving it to 9 wins. Much less value to be had there.

If Jackson is the weak link (and only weak link) on the line, what an impressive upgrade turnaround in 1 year. Jackson should also get a big boost by the return of Darrisaw.
Harrison Philips, I think is an overreaction. Enough has been posted on it from both angles to not rehash, but we'll see how it plays out.
Looks like a lock for upgrades at QB2 and WR. I think the CB room is set through Blackmond, but wouldn't be surprised with a pickup on waivers and Vaugh to the P.S. I'll go on the record that there will be no trade for CB.
Beyond that the big area I hope we see some movement on is special teams. That's the biggest hole, imo, on the roster (barring injuries).

Marcus said that? Here’s a tidbit for Marcus : Wilson isn’t practicing at center He played in the Vikings game at center, so no he absolutely is practicing there. According to PFF, he did play LG in the 1st and 3rd preseason games and confirmed he played 30 snaps at center vs the Vikings.

I like our offense more than the defense overall.
If whole who has a better 4 at WR? Not many if any. We have a top 5 TE, 2 Backs and a solid second TE. With two top tier OT pairs, and what should be a strong, bigger and more physical interior. We match up with anyone on offense spot for spot.
Defense the front 7 is amazing, S should be sound. My only question is CB it’s the one spot I feel we on the lower tier on talent.
We have to many weapons and to well coached. Mixed with JJ own talent. He will be fine. It’s the CBs.
Why not just get one now, because I guarantee we will have to at some point. This is not seeing time, this go time. We have one for sure CB maybe 2. Nudie my guy but not yet ready imo. If we could at least get one CB preferably with some size and average for depth has to happen at some point. If completely and we stay healthy this the best team I seen us have in a while.

Kwesi talking big nickel which is an option. You can’t always do it. Because teams with fast WRs and 3 deep can counter and stress the big nickel. Nice to have it but you need CBs. BFlo gotta know that. He’s hard to question I know, but man this a rare time I disagree with him.

Purple Insider: The 10 biggest questions facing the 2025 Minnesota Vikings
How will Kevin O’Connell handle JJ McCarthy? Kid gloves or all-in? Over the last three seasons, the Vikings’ head coach has leaned into the quarterback regardless of who the quarterback was. The Vikings have thrown the fifth most passes in the NFL since 2022 and even Josh Dobbs threw 151 passes over five appearances. Will things go the same way with first-year starter JJ McCarthy?
There is a good case for going all-in on the 2024 first-round pick. The Vikings have one of the most dynamic groups of weapons in the NFL. Justin Jefferson’s prowess on downfield/intermediate passes has the capability to make any QB into the best version of themselves. Last year with Sam Darnold he caught 45 passes on 77 targets that traveled more than 10 yards downfield. Out of 15 potential contested-catch opportunities, he grabbed nine. That seems like a compelling argument for pushing the ball to Jefferson over and over downfield rather than playing it safe.
If Jefferson was the only option, then asking McCarthy to pump him the ball repeatedly might be tough to accomplish but he has multiple underneath weapons as well. Adam Thielen caught 28 of 29 passes last season that traveled between 0-10 yards in the air and nabbed 32 of 39 short attempts in his direction. Not to mention that Aaron Jones caught 51 passes out of the backfield.
Leaning into McCarthy could be reframed as leaning into the most complete group of weapons in the NFL.
At the same time, McCarthy hasn’t thrown a pass in a real game since the college national championship game in 2023. The Vikings rebuilt the offensive line and added Jordan Mason to run the football more effectively, so it would make sense for O’Connell to ground-and-pound with Jones and Mason from the outset and then slowly build up McCarthy as they go. It would also make sense to try to get into positive down-and-distance situations and use play-action as often as possible with an inexperienced QB.
O’Connell’s QB whispering abilities will be tested as he must balance when to push the gas pedal down, when to push McCarthy through tough moments, when to take the pressure off, and when to live to play another day.
How far can JJ McCarthy take the Vikings? When a young quarterback is taking over a franchise, there is a natural desire to temper expectations. In this instance, however, the Vikings lead the entire NFL in cash spending for the 2025 season and have a roster largely made up of veteran stars and a head coach who is going into his fourth year without a playoff win. That doesn’t sound like a franchise that should have a ton of patience for the bumps along the road.
Recent history would suggest that it’s not that crazy to put all the pressure on an inexperienced QB. Within the first three years of their careers, we have seen NFC quarterbacks Jalen Hurts, Jared Goff and Brock Purdy go to the Super Bowl with stacked rosters. Other young QBs like Dak Prescott, Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Trevor Lawrence, CJ Stroud and Bo Nix have also led teams to the postseason in either their first or second years.
The question isn’t if it’s possible that McCarthy could take a supremely-gifted offense into the postseason but whether there is a ceiling on the team because of his inexperience. Will he be far enough along in his development to win in the toughest division in the NFL and then take a team through the postseason? We’re going to find out.
How will McCarthy be viewed when 2025 is over? When the Vikings picked McCarthy 10th overall in the 2024 draft, they were looking for a quarterback good enough to take advantage of the rookie QB contract edge with the salary cap. By the end of the season, will the franchise see him as someone who can compete for a championship within his rookie contract window?
Not that quarterback rankings really matter but…what tier will McCarthy fall into when The Athletic’s Mike Sando releases his article in 2026 based on NFL executives and coaches’ rankings?
Does the backfield have a 1A and 1B? Clay expects a 50-50 carry split in his projections, giving Jones 182 rushes and Mason 178 carries. Is that how it’s really going to play out after Mason had an impressive camp or will the Vikings still be Jones’ team and Mason will be there for occasional support, particularly in short yardage and red zone?
Mason’s performance over 236 career carries certainly suggests that he should be more than just a part-time runner. He has averaged 5.3 yards per carry and was top-10 in yards after contact in 2024. O’Connell said this offseason that he feels Jones has been at his best during his career when paired with a bruiser and they would like to see him at full speed for the entire season rather than being worn down like he was last year. Will they stick with that? Can Mason be effective enough in pure passing situations with blocking and receiving to get those key snaps as well?
Can the defense stop the run as well as 2024? The Vikings allowed the second fewest yards rushing in the NFL last season. That will be very hard to repeat considering the QBs and RBs that they face this year, including Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs (x2), Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, Jayden Daniels and Josh Jacobs (x2).
Brian Flores’ defense is revamped with Javon Hargrave and Jonathan Allen rather than Harrison Phillips and Jonathan Bullard, which gives them a much more dangerous pass rush on the interior but it does subtract from their ability to stuff the run. The last time Hargrave and Allen played full seasons in 2023, they ranked 129th and 182nd in PFF run defense grade out of 200 DTs. Will they play differently in Minnesota? Can Jalen Redmond and Levi Drake Rodriguez fill in some of the gaps? Will the linebackers and safeties be able to make up the difference? If someone gets hurt, will they be able to make up the difference with depth?
Plus, tracking down running QBs will be another story. The Vikings did not face very many mobile quarterbacks last year as they were dominating the run game. They were also so good at forcing turnovers and playing with the lead that they were not often in a position to have to stop the other club from slamming the ball on the ground. If the environment is different this year, how will they adapt?
Did their investments in veteran players work? In a league filled with teams that are always trying to get younger, the Vikings went into free agency and came away with a bunch of players who are past the traditional primes for their position. Ryan Kelly, Hargrave, Allen and bringing back Aaron Jones and Harrison Smith has made them one of the oldest teams in the league. Some of the players they acquired have suffered significant injuries recently, including expensive right guard Will Fries. Will this group of elder statesmen stay healthy enough to win the NFC North and go deep into the playoffs?
The other part of this question is whether they have enough depth to deal with injuries. Can Michael Jurgens handle several games at center if called upon? How will the secondary look if Smith misses time? Could they trust Ty Chandler to help if Jones went out and Mason was RB1?
Plus their last-minute add to the receiver room Adam Thielen is 35. Will he be able to contribute at a high level before and after Addison’s suspension?
There are plenty of older teams that have been proven winners but it also puts under the microscope their two or three-year window. If some of these free agents don’t work out, then what?
Is the secondary good enough to match up with elite QBs/WRs? We mentioned the running games that the Vikings will have to face but the passing attacks are every bit as nasty, especially if the 2024 draft class elevates its game. The Vikings will face Joe Burrow, Jared Goff, Jalen Hurts, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Jordan Love, Jayden Daniels, Sam Darnold, Dak Prescott… that’s a lot of quality resumes. And right now past the starting two outside corners is Jeff Okudah, who has had trouble staying healthy and hasn’t performed up to his draft status.
At safety, the Vikings are hoping Smith still has it and Theo Jackson can become the player that they’ve seen in small doses and training camp but there are still a lot of questions. Could DB be a place that they look to add at the deadline if some of these top QBs are performing at a high level against them? Or is it Murphy, Rodgers, Okudah all the way?

Alec Lewis:
The front seven looks more formidable than ever Let’s start with the newcomers.
Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave has a 14.3 percent pressure rate since 2021. That figure trumps the numbers of Quinnen Williams, Chris Jones, Aaron Donald and Dexter Lawrence over that same span. The team’s other addition on the interior, Jonathan Allen, has also been dominant. From 2021 to 2023, Allen had the ninth-highest pressure rate (11.3 percent) among defensive tackles.
These are drastically different figures from what the Vikings have had. Since 2021, Harrison Phillips and Jonathan Bullard combined for an 8.7 percent pressure rate — almost half of Hargrave’s individual number. Add those two to dominant edge rushers Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel, and Minnesota might have something special with its defensive line.
“We don’t accept anything less than a sack,” Greenard said a couple of weeks ago, “or some type of effect on the quarterback, some disruption of the play. Everybody should (have) that mindset. Every snap. Why not? Why not the guys who are the first line of defense? We should be making every single play.”
What happens if second-year pro and former first-rounder Dallas Turner takes a leap forward? O’Connell hinted at such a development on Wednesday. What if defensive tackle Jalen Redmond has developed as a pass rusher the way many staffers have insinuated? Throw in Blake Cashman, Ivan Pace Jr. and Josh Metellus, three exceptional blitzers from the second level, and it’s not a stretch to say Minnesota could eclipse 50 sacks.
A new play style? Run-game evolution As fun as it is to talk about zone and gap running schemes, explosiveness and efficiency on the ground require men up front who can move other men.
The Vikings overhauled the interior of their offensive line this offseason. Ryan Kelly is the new center. Rookie Donovan Jackson will start at left guard. Will Fries will replace Dalton Risner at right guard. These three should be a massive boon for a run game that ranks 29th in the NFL in yards per carry since 2022, when O’Connell was hired.
“We’ve got a better front overall, we feel like,” offensive coordinator Wes Phillips said early in training camp. “We put some resources into getting some free agents, and that’s certainly going to help us.”
The free-agent guard is a "monster" who brings nastiness and snarl to an interior of the offensive line in need of both. It also helps to have a stable of productive ball carriers. Acquiring Jordan Mason — then paying him $7.23 million — was a signal of what the Vikings want their offense to become. Mason forced a missed tackle on a league-high 37.3 percent of his carries last season. In Weeks 1 through 8, he also led the NFL with 51 missed tackles forced.
Likely gone are the days of running the ball less than 45 percent of the time. Even with that throwing rate, more of the passes are likely to be screens. The Vikings employ respected run-blocking tight end Josh Oliver. They traded for receiver Adam Thielen, who, when lined up near the tackles in condensed formations, is more viable than the players previously in that role.
Not much concern about the corners There are only four cornerbacks on the roster: Byron Murphy Jr., Isaiah Rodgers, Jeff Okudah and Dwight McGlothern. Minnesota paid a premium for Murphy in the offseason. He’s proven. The other three? They started a combined three games on defense last season.
When general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was asked about the lack of depth last week, he didn’t hint at any impending move. This isn’t that surprising, though. The Vikings brass maintained confidence in this group throughout the offseason.
Only time will tell whether that optimism is misplaced. Rodgers flashed stickiness and ball skills during training camp, and Okudah’s physicality at the line of scrimmage is undeniable. Both players are also young enough to withstand the physical toll it takes to play more man coverage.
Health may be the most crucial question, however. The Vikings would likely need an experienced player to step in if Murphy, Rodgers or Okudah suffers an injury. In the meantime, the coaches have suggested they believe the safety room can help manage requirements in coverage.
Quick predictions Offensive MVP: Justin Jefferson Non-obvious offensive X-factor: Donovan Jackson Defensive MVP: Jonathan Greenard Non-obvious defensive X-factor: Theo Jackson

In Marcus' big prediction video, he has the Vikings going 8-9 and finishing in 4th place with the Bears going 10-7, despite being ranked far lower in the overall standings than us... yeah, I don't get that one.
He did do a funny thing on the Lions preview:

Something that's not talked about enough regarding improving the run game is the addition of Asst. O-Line coach Keith Carter. Has a bit of a reputation as being disliked by quite a number of players, but has had a good run including a 5 year stint with the Titans.
