Torchiere lamps project light to the ceiling and add height to your existing decor scheme. A torchier lamp can create a good ambience in a room. Wooden floor lamps - and even floor lamps with shelves - combine function and design beautifully. You'll find that a floor lamp tends to be fairly tall, ranging from around 5 to 7 feet. This places the main light fixture around eye level. The shade on the floor lamp will then help to shield your eyes from bulb glare. In the case of a floor torchiere lamp, the shade will direct light upwards away from your eyes.

Generally speaking most floor lamps are around the same height as a person, with a switch to operate them in the upper half the pole. Or alternatively they may be operated by a foot switch, where you simple step on the switch to change modes. Since the floor lamp is quite tall, it will tend to shed light onto the ceiling and diffuse it into the room, which means that a floor lamp is a way to add ambient lighting to a room.

While a torch style lamp directs almost all its light onto the ceiling, producing an ambient background reflected light, floor lamps with traditional lamp shades will emit light both upwards and downwards. The downward light can be useful near to or over a chair or seating area, such as for reading a book or sitting to perform crafts.

If what you want is to focus on downward light only, and perhaps to position the light for tasks, then a floor reading lamp may be better suited. Note that most reading lamps tend to be shorter since they position the light where you'd want it over a shoulder when you are sitting down. These include swing-arm pharmacy lamps.

For complete ambient light, choose a torchiere lamp.

For ambient and local area light choose a traditional floor lamp with a shade.

For focused reading and maximum light below the lamp, choose a floor reading lamp.
