Who qualifies for a Veteran Indicator?

As per NDCC 37-01-40(1) Veteran defined – Uniform service dates for wartime veterans:

A "veteran" is an individual who has served on continuous federalized active military duty:

for one hundred eighty days or the full period,

for which the individual was called or ordered to active military duty,

for reasons other than training,

and who was discharged or released under other than dishonorable conditions.

Note: A shorter term of service qualifies an individual as a veteran if the discharge includes the phrases "expiration of term of service", "completion of required service", or other language to that effect.

How do I apply for a Veteran Indicator?

Take a copy of your discharge papers (DD214) to a Veteran Service Officer. The Veteran Service Officer will verify that you qualify as a veteran according to NDCC 37-01-04(1), then complete and sign the SFN 59980 "Verification of Veteran Status for Veteran Indicator on Drivers License" form.

You can take this form to an ND Driver License Site when you renew your driver license. If your license is not yet due for renewal, you will be charged an $8 duplicate fee.
