What is the new Mega Millions game?
Mega Millions is bigger and better than ever with a new and improved game! The new game has a larger starting jackpot, bigger jackpots more frequently, faster growing jackpots, and improved odds. It also has a new feature – a built-in multiplier on every play. This automatically multiplies non-jackpot prizes by 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X. Mega Millions is a multi-state draw game available nationwide with mega jackpots. Each play is $5. Mega Millions can be played in 45 states plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
What are the new game features?
The game has a larger starting jackpot of $50 million that will typically increase by a minimum of $10 million per roll, depending on sales. The game also has better odds. Say goodbye to breakeven prizes – meaning whenever you win, you will receive more than the cost of the ticket. There is also a new built-in multiplier, which means you can win up to 10X on a non-jackpot prize on every play.
How does the multiplier work?
The new multiplier is automatically printed on Mega Millions tickets for each play at no additional cost. Each play has its own multiplier of 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X. For example, with a 2X multiplier, a $5 win would automatically become a $10 win, while a 10X would turn into a $50 win. Every Mega Millions play will be randomly assigned a multiplier. The multiplier for your play cannot be selected; it is assigned by the random number generator. A multiplier may repeat for different plays on the same ticket.
How much does it cost to play?
The new Mega Millions game costs $5 per play.
Have the odds improved
Yes. The overall odds have improved from 1 in 24.12 to 1 in 23.08. The jackpot odds have also improved from 1 in 302,575,350 to 1 in 290,472,336. See the 'Game Odds' tab on this page for more details.
Has the starting jackpot changed?
Yes. The new starting jackpot is $50 million. If the jackpot is not won, it will typically increase by a minimum of $10 million per roll, depending on sales.
Is there an Advance Play® option for the new Mega Millions?
Yes. Advance Play, which lets you play multiple draws with 1 purchase, is available for up to 10 draws (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 10) on the Mega Millions® playslips and Lottery self-service terminals. Each ticket has up to 10 plays printed on it.
Do I need to use a new Mega Millions playslip?
If you are selecting your own numbers and not using Quick Pick®, you will need to use the new Mega Millions playslip. The updated Mega Millions playslip is available for use at your local California Lottery retailer.
What hasn't changed with Mega Millions?
Mega Millions still offers players large jackpots, bi-weekly draws on Tuesday and Friday night, and an easy-to-play game. You can still choose your own numbers or purchase a Quick Pick® at your favorite Lottery retailer.
Can I pay $2 to play Mega Millions without a multiplier?
No. As of April 5, 2025, every Mega Millions play costs $5 and includes a built-in multiplier up to 10X on all non-jackpot base prizes.
What are the odds that my play will have a 10X multiplier?
To see the odds for all multipliers, click the ‘Game Odds’ tab on this page.
When are Mega Millions® draws held?
Draws take place Tuesdays and Fridays at 8 p.m., and the entry must be made by 7:45 p.m. No sales or ticket validations can take place from 7:45 p.m. to 7:50 p.m., which is when a draw break separates sales during draw periods. Tickets sold after 7:50 p.m. are ineligible for that night’s draw, but are eligible for the following draw.
Are Group Play and Multiple Ownership Claims available?
Yes. Up to 100 people can make a multiple ownership claim for Powerball®, SuperLotto Plus® and Mega Millions®. For information on how to claim a prize click here.

You must select this option within 60 days after the Lottery authorizes payment.
