2022 Slide 02 - Why Study Abroad? Before you apply for any study abroad programme, think about why you want to go on study abroad:

To learn to be more independent and for personal development?

To take courses not available at HKU?

To learn a new language and experience a new culture?

To travel and make new friends from around the world?

To enrich your CV for job and overseas postgraduate application?

This might give you some clues when selecting host institutions. It is also wise to note down your goals and reasons before your departure and reviewing them during and after your exchange to see how far you have achieved these goals. Slide 03 - When Should I Start Planning? Planning can begin as early as your first year at HKU.

Applications to most programmes are to be made one year ahead. You need to make some academic plans and build a foundation in a foreign language if you are going to a non-English speaking country.

You can apply if you are a non-final year full time student. In most cases, Year 2 or above students will have priorities.

There are also limited quota available in the late round applications. Keep track of the email communications and announcements so that you don’t miss any deadlines. Slide 04 - APPLICATION TIMELINE The HKU Worldwide Undergraduate Student Exchange Programme Oct - Dec: Main Round Application

Main Round Application: for Full Year, Semester 1 and Semester 2

Late Round Application: for Semester 1 and Semester 2

2nd Late Round Application: for Semester 2

*Reminder: You need to have a valid IELTS / TOFEL result ready to apply for exchange, so please plan in advance in applying and taking the IELTS / TOFEL Test Slide 05 - What Should I Consider? Where can I go and what can I study?

How will it affect my study plan? (e.g. The credit transfer would be based on Pass / Fail grade, is that desirable for me or I want to use the semester to attempt for a higher GPA?)

Am I planning to transfer credits? Do I need to defer my graduation?

Can I afford to go abroad? Are there any money issue? Slide 06 - What Study Abroad Programmes Can I Choose? There are different options for studying abroad:

HKUWW Undergraduate Student Exchange Programme

Faculty-level Exchange Programme

Worldwide Plus Visiting Programmes

Short-term Abroad Partnerships

Short-term Abroad Opportunities

Globalink Research Internship

Visiting Programmes

For details, please visit IAO’s website at https://intlaffairs.hku.hk Slide 07 - Where Can I Go and What Can I Study? HKU has 300+ exchange partners in more than 40 countries.

There are faculty level exchange partners faculty to provide more opportunities to home students

Conduct research about the countries you like and the programmes/ courses offered by your preferred universities.

If possible, meet with the in bond exchange students who have studied there before as they have the first-hand experience.

IAO established a “star scale” to indicate the popularity of each partner so student could have a sense of the level of competitiveness in applying. Slide 08 - When Considering the Host Institution...

CGPA requirement and reference CGPA

Restriction on major and year of study

Course offered and possibility to transfer credits

English language requirement (which may be higher than that of IAO)

Medium of instruction at the institution and in non-English speaking countries

Academic calendar / clash of semesters

Slide 09 - Can I Transfer Credits? YES. If you wish to transfer credits from your interested host institution, you must apply for credit transfer in advance according to your home Faculty’s regulations and requirement.

Step 1: Check the courses offered by the host institution which you are interested.

Step 2: Consult your programme director/Faculty course selection adviser about your academic plans and the courses you intend to take.

Step 3: Do course mapping and get approval from your Faculty on your study plan prior to departure and before the deadline set by your Faculty.

The actual transfer of exchange credits take place only when you return to HKU. Your Faculty has the final authority to decide on how your courses taken at the host institution will be credited towards your HKU degree. Slide 10 - Credit Transfer Databases Check the credit transfer database of your home Faculty, if they have one, in which past credit transfer records for course mapping are listed out.

This gives a reference of the courses which can be mapped with those in your Home Faculty.

Some examples:
Slide 11 - Credit Transfer More about Credit Transfer:

Remember to complete the credit transfer application form for your Faculty by the deadline. (check Faculty website)

Don't forget to plan for additional alternative courses because no change of courses would be entertained after the pre-approval.

If you do not wish to transfer credits back to HKU, you should still take the normal study load in the host institution.

You may have to defer your graduation if you do not wish to/ cannot transfer the credits back to HKU.
