About Alfama

Alfama is the oldest district in Lisbon, Portugal, predating the city's Moorish occupation in the 8th century. Located on the slopes between São Jorge Castle and the Tagus River, it survived the devastating 1755 earthquake that destroyed much of Lisbon due to its solid bedrock foundation.

This historic neighborhood is characterized by its maze-like narrow streets, steep stairs, and traditional limestone buildings. Originally, Alfama was primarily inhabited by fishermen and the poor, but today it represents one of Lisbon's most authentic and culturally rich areas. The district's name derives from the Arabic "Al-hamma," meaning "hot fountains" or "baths."

Notable landmarks in Alfama include the São Jorge Castle, Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa) - the city's oldest church dating back to 1147, and the National Pantheon (Igreja de Santa Engrácia). The district is also home to several significant viewpoints, known as "miradouros," including Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol, offering panoramic views of the river and terracotta rooftops.

Alfama is particularly famous for being the birthplace of Fado music, a melancholic Portuguese musical genre now recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The district houses numerous Fado houses and the Fado Museum, which documents the history of this traditional music style.

During June, Alfama becomes the epicenter of Lisbon's Santo António festivities, when the neighborhood transforms into an open-air feast with street decorations, grilled sardines, and popular music.
